Shayla Connor

Hi! My name is Shayla Connor and I'm from Pekin, IL. I just recently graduated from Pekin Community High School and am currently attending Illinois Central College, or ICC. I've been interested in the field of business and interior design for a while. I'm also a part of the pest control business since my dad owns a pest control business here in Pekin. When I discovered this scholarship opportunity, I immediately wanted to apply since the pest control business is a very helpful community and with the field I'm going into, I wanted to be involved in a environment where helping others is a top priority. Being selected as the recipient of this scholarship is an honor. The funding will tremendously help me pay off college tuition and the scholarship represents an outstanding purpose: to always help others and do your best whenever, wherever.

Sarina Dale

My name is Sarina Dale, and I am a 19-year-old student majoring in marketing. This semester, I started at the University of Illinois in Chicago, after transferring in from McHenry Community College. This will be my third year as a college student, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a Flame. I was raised in McHenry, IL, and recently moved to Old Irving Park, to live with my oldest brother and his fiancé, who are both UIC alumni. I have another older brother who just graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign this past Spring. He was also a 2022 Arthur Toedtman Scholarship winner. He worked alongside our parents at Schopen Pest Solutions during his breaks from school in the summer and winter. My youngest brother is a sophomore in high school, and our dog Buki is always cheering us on from the front yard.

In high school, I participated in as many leadership opportunities as I could. This included being a Leadership in Action freshmen leader, an NHS member, a Key Club member, and an intern for Kids in Need McHenry County. I wanted to absorb as much valuable information as possible on how to be a team player, be someone to look up to and be an active listener. I am so thankful to the IPCA for seeing the value that I have and helping many of my family members and myself find success on our paths to success.

Kyle Ritenour

My name is Kyle Ritenour, and I am currently enrolled at Ivy Technical College in Gary, Indiana. I am currently employed at Rapid Pest Solutions in Munster, Indiana. I began as an Intern during the summer of 2016 riding with other technicians to learn the service and pest control business. In 2017, I worked as a part-time technician during the summer servicing all mosquito customers. I began full-time in January 2018 with my own work truck, now a van. I also have my own pest control service route to manage. I do all mosquito and termite work. I also do work destroying insect inspections for VA and FHA loans. I’m also being trained to take over the company my father built from the ground up when he retires.

During the time I have been with Rapid, I have successfully tested and received my Illinois certifications in General Standards, Insects and Rodents, and Termites. I am also licensed in Indiana in General Standards, Category 7A Insects and Rodents, Category 7B Termites, and Category 12 WDI Inspections.

Jacob Evans

My name is Jake Evans and I’ve been working in the Pest Control Industry for the past 3 years. Now 21 years old and in my last year at the University of Illinois, I’ve been working for Schopen Pest Solutions throughout my college career during the Summers and Winters while I’m home. I was raised and still currently live in McHenry, Illinois with my mom and dad who also work at Schopen. Along with my parents, I have a younger sister who just started her first year in college, a younger brother who’s in his first year in high school, and a dog named Buki who holds down the fort while we are away. Growing up, I loved playing baseball and other sports and went on to play baseball and basketball throughout high school. My favorite part about working in the Pest Control Industry thus far has been seeing the relief of our clients after we’ve solved their issues. Pest control is an industry that calls for a strong work ethic and a keen eye for detail, two skills that I’ve been able to take with me when I go off to school. I couldn’t be more grateful to everybody at Schopen Pest Solutions for showing me what hard work and passion look like on a day-to-day basis and to the IPCA for helping me continue my path of higher education.

John Chambers

Throughout my high school career, I have worked hard to graduate with a 4.1 gpa. I have taken advantage of clubs, honors programs, sports, and other extracurricular activities every step of the way.

I was a three-sport varsity athlete. I played soccer, basketball, and baseball at a class 6 high school— Blue Springs South. I was a member of the National Honor Society and an elected member of the Senate Leadership Program, I have completed my A+ Tutor Program hours.

With sports, I have learned about what it means to be a good team member and to never give up. I have been on winning teams and losing teams. I think it true about what they say when you lose. It does build character. It teaches you about life and about being a good sport on and off the field.

The Senate Leadership Program and National Honor Society have also taught me how to get involved in the community through food drives, fundraisers, and events designed to help a cause or raise awareness. Another activity I pursued was the A+ Tutor Program. I volunteered with a pre-K class in the summer and a second-grade class during the fall of my senior year. It was a great experience.

Looking forward, I plan to pursue a career in the field of healthcare while playing baseball at Johnson County Community College. I want to be able to help people.

In conclusion, I have learned a lot while having fun working with others and getting involved in the school and community. Also, as a child of a parent who has worked in pest control my entire life, I have a great deal of respect for the industry and the vital role it plays in our world.

CALEB SCHOPEN

Hi, my name is Caleb Schopen. I just graduated from McHenry East High School in McHenry, IL, and will be attending Cornell College in the fall. My two passions are endurance running and learning about the anatomy and physiology of the body. At Cornell I will be running for the Cross Country and Track & Field teams, as well as majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy in the hopes of either becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon or Physical Therapist. My dream is to either compete on a big stage for running and/or to help as many people as I can recover from injuries. I have dealt with injuries my whole high school career, so it would be a blessing to return the favor of all the PTs that have helped me along the way. I am lucky enough to be able to combine my passions in one place and I am excited to get started in August!

2020 Recipients

Aaron Blue

My name is Aaron Blue, and I am a Junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign studying Integrative Biology Honors and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. Here at school, I have grown a lot more than I could have even realized. From meeting new friends, joining organizations, and actively pursuing a degree that I know I can use for the rest of my life, the advancement I have made personally is unfathomable. Personally, I think my favorite memory so far from school is taking an ice-skating class with my friends. I never thought that I could even stand up, but by the end of the class, I was even able to do basic jumps! I am very excited to see what these next two years have in store for me and want to thank everyone involved in receiving IPCA’s Arthur Toedtman Memorial Scholarship Award. Here’s to a great schooling experience!

Andrew Blue

I am 21 years old from Jacksonville, IL, and a junior at Illinois College where I plan to obtain a major in Mathematics and a minor in Economics. I have always had a love for mathematics and plan to apply it to a career in statistics and data analytics. For right now though, I devote part of my days to a part-time job as a bank teller, and some evenings to tutoring high school students in mathematics. I also have a passion for choral music and singing with others. When I can find time, I enjoy writing and singing music both solo and with others. I am a firm believer that math-oriented minds are musical minds.

Tanya Mudd

My name is Tanya Mudd, and l live in Cerro Gordo, Il. I have lived in the same house off and on my entire life. This house has been in my family for forty-five years. I have a 15-year-old son, who is my world, his name is Dalton, who I am now raising in the same house that I was raised in. I worked at Scotty’s Pest Control in Decatur, IL for ten years. I learned a lot working for Scotty, he was a kind man who showed me a world that is behind the scenes as well as unappreciated. Scotty helped me to become the educated driven individual that I am today. Working in pest control has given me the insight that most people do not have when going into a career change as I am doing. I am working to become a chef and hope to open my own establishment someday. Whether it be a small restaurant or a nice little grocery store, pest control has taught me the importance of sanitation before I even stepped into a kitchen. I am thankful for the opportunities that this position has provided for me.

Logan Novak

Logan Novak is a Computer Science major at Valparaiso University. He has lived in Michigan City, Indiana his whole life. When he’s not working on projects for school, you can find him tutoring students in math, playing video games with his friends, or listening to music. Some of his interests include math, biking, and traveling. One interesting fact about him is that he collects video game consoles. He currently owns seven of them and plans to get an additional console this year. During the summer, he works as a pest control technician at Franklin Pest Solutions. After graduation, Logan plans to pursue a career in software engineering or IT.
